So What Do We Do?

For Domestic Workers

What is UIF?

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is there to support you when you cannot work.

You can claim UIF if:

You lose your job
You are retrenched
You go on maternity leave
You are sick and unable to work
Your employer passes away
Your dependants need support if you pass away

Each month:

1% is deducted from your salary
Your employer also pays 1%
The total 2% goes into a government fund to protect you

UIF gives you temporary financial support while you recover or look for new work.

For Employers

UIF Registration

As a domestic employer in South Africa, you are legally required to register your domestic worker for UIF.

How it works:

You deduct 1% from your employee’s salary
You contribute an additional 1%
The total 2% is paid to the UIF

This protects your employee if they:

Lose their job
Go on maternity leave
Become ill
Pass away

Failure to register can result in penalties and legal consequences.

What is COIDA?

COIDA stands for Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases.

If you are injured or become ill because of your work, COIDA covers:

Medical expenses
75% of your salary while you recover
Compensation for permanent injuries
Support for your dependants if something serious happens

You do not have to go to court or fight your employer.
The government fund pays the costs.

COIDA Registration

COIDA protects you from serious financial and legal risk if your domestic worker is injured while working in your home.

You pay:

A small annual assessment fee to the Compensation Fund

If an accident happens:

The government fund pays medical bills
The fund covers lost wages (up to 75%)
Your employee cannot sue you for damages

This transfers financial liability away from you and ensures your employee is properly cared for.

Why Employers Should Register

Registering for UIF and COIDA:

✔ Keeps you compliant with South African labour law

✔ Protects you from civil claims and lawsuits

✔ Avoids fines and penalties

✔ Builds trust with your employee

✔ Provides security for both parties

It is a small cost that prevents potentially devastating financial consequences.
